Keen on Keane? Sure, but at what price?
July 29, 2008 8:37 am Liverpool, Premier LeagueSo football fans, Liverpool has wrapped up the signing of Irish terror and professed boyhood red Robbie Keane from Tottenham. A reported 19 million pound transfer with a few squirly add-ons means our favorite Spanish son has another proven EPL goal scorer to both play off of and eleviate some of the pressure placed on his shoulders (and dashing good looks). Now I don’t think anyone is going to dispu
te the fact that Robbie can bag himself some goals but his age (28) will cause everyone to raise not one but the pair of eyebrows when we factor in the price paid to secure his services.
To be honest, I don’t know if Tom Hicks (or his lesser known half ole Georgie Gillet) do thier banking at the same branch as fellow Texas dreamland dweller George W. Bush but isn’t 19 million and rising for a 28 year old ’star player’ a little steep? I know our debt isn’t going to hit that sweet half Trillion crazy Bush has rung up but with the reported (and by that I mostly mean rumoured) numbers coming out of the Anfield coffers, that’s a steep price to pay for a player that might have 1-2 good seasons left in him. At the price we shelled out for him, we might have been able to sign another Spanish player. Who plays up front. You know the one.
No one has to sell Liverpool Football Club to me. It sold itself a long, long time ago. When an opportunity like this comes along, you have to grab it with both hands.
In our push to win the EPL (laugh now if you want) we definately needed more firepower up front. Scoring goals has been our one main weakness for quite some time and if Torres get’s hurt (which might be a dark, dark day) we’re going to need someone like Robbie to score on the road and in those tough games that Voronin can’t wrap his ponytail around. He’s an astute signing, no doubt about that, I just hope his price tag is going to repayed in goals scored (against the Mancs maybe?).
In other news, we also signed (to less fanfare and media hype) Daniel Ngog from Paris St. Germain who looks to be one hell of a prospect. Good on Rafa for that one. Looking forward to seeing what he can do in the reserve & cup games this coming year.
